Justo una semana después de que Honda ganara su 19º Campeonato AMA Supercross a manos de Hunter Lawrence, Jett Lawrence consiguió el 20º. El piloto del Team Honda HRC llevó su CRF250R a una segura tercera posición final en la ronda de Denver del Campeonato de la Región Oeste de 250SX, aumentando su ventaja de puntos a unos insuperables 34, a falta de una ronda.

Natural de Landsborough, en Queensland (Australia), Lawrence disfrutó de una exitosa carrera deportiva en su país y en Europa antes de trasladarse a Estados Unidos con su familia en 2019, para pilotar en el equipo satélite Factory Connection Honda (inicialmente como amateur). Lawrence se convirtió en profesional en 2020 y se trasladó al equipo de fábrica de Honda para 2021, y en sus tres años con el Team Honda HRC, ha disfrutado de una trayectoria increíblemente exitosa en 250 4 tiempos, estableciéndose como el piloto de Supercross/Motocross AMA 125/250 más exitoso en la historia de Honda, con 26 victorias en las dos series. (La categoría, que actualmente es para máquinas de 250cc 4T, solía ser disputada por motos de 125cc 2T).

Lawrence ganó el Campeonato AMA Pro Motocross 250 en 2021 y 2022, así como el título 250SX East 2022, y esta nueva corona West lo convierte en el cuarto piloto que ha ganado los campeonatos 125/250SX de ambas regiones. Lawrence también se une a James Stewart como los únicos pilotos en ganar ambas regiones y dos coronas AMA Pro Motocross. Además, es el cuarto piloto en ganar cuatro títulos profesionales AMA 125/250.

"Esta moto me ha tratado muy bien", dijo Jett Lawrence en el podio tras la carrera. "El equipo es irreal. Podríamos estar en boxes en una tienda de campaña, para ser honesto, no me importaría. Ni siquiera es un equipo, es una familia. Han hecho [todo] por mi hermano y por mí".

El rendimiento de los hermanos Lawrence esta temporada ha sido poco menos que dominante. Jett ha ganado cinco de las ocho rondas de 250SX West disputadas hasta la fecha, mientras que Hunter se ha impuesto en siete de las nueve rondas de East disputadas hasta el momento. (El final de la serie, un enfrentamiento combinado 250SX Este-Oeste, se disputará la próxima semana en Salt Lake City). Es la primera vez que dos hermanos ganan las coronas de las regiones Este y Oeste en la misma temporada.

El último campeonato de Lawrence es el sexto título de la Región Oeste para Honda, con otros conseguidos por Ty Davis, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Preston y Eli Tomac. Incluyendo sus 14 coronas de la Región Este, Honda tiene un total de 20 en ambas regiones. Once de ellas han llegado desde 2010, el mayor número de cualquier otro fabricante durante ese período. Esta es solo la novena vez que un fabricante se ha llevado los títulos de ambas regiones en el mismo año. (De ellas, tres fueron logradas por Honda en 1991, 2012 y 2023).

Con tan solo 19 años, Jett iniciará su carrera en 450 a bordo de la CRF450RWE del equipo oficial Honda HRC el 27 de mayo, cuando comience la serie AMA Pro Motocross en Pala, California.

"Qué increíble temporada de Supercross 250 AMA para Honda, y qué carrera de 250 para Jett", dijo Brandon Wilson, Director de Deportes y Experiencias de American Honda. "Sabíamos cuando contratamos a Jett antes de la temporada 2021 que iba a ser especial, pero no creo que nadie pudiera haber predicho el éxito que ya ha disfrutado; de los cinco campeonatos que estaban sobre la mesa desde que se unió a nuestro equipo, ha ganado cuatro, y este ha sido el más dominante hasta ahora. Ha sido una carrera increíble a bordo de la CRF250R, y no podemos esperar a ver lo que hace con la CRF450RWE".

El Campeonato 250SX West 2023 de Lawrence continúa una exitosa temporada en la que Honda conmemora el 50 aniversario de su primera moto de motocross de producción, la CR250M Elsinore, con la que Gary Jones ganó el primer Campeonato AMA de Motocross de Honda en 1973.
