Con una victoria en el evento principal el sábado por la noche a bordo de su CRF450RWE en el Estadio Rice-Eccles de Salt Lake City, Chase Sexton se adjudicó el Campeonato 450SX 2023 en la final de la serie AMA Supercross. Esta corona de la categoría reina sigue a los dos títulos de 250SX de los compañeros de Sexton en el Team Honda HRC, Jett Lawrence, que se adjudicó el Campeonato de la Región Oeste el pasado fin de semana en Denver, y Hunter Lawrence, que logró el de la Región Este hace dos semanas en Nashville.

Este campeonato fue especialmente duro, ya que la agotadora serie de 17 rondas eliminó a varios de los mejores pilotos por lesión. Sexton perseveró y consiguió seis victorias en las pruebas principales, además de ser el piloto más rápido de todos, clasificándose entre los primeros en 14 de las 17 pruebas. El piloto de 23 años estableció varias marcas récord de la temporada, como el mayor número de podios (13), el mayor número de resultados entre los cinco primeros (16), el mayor número de victorias en carreras eliminatorias (8) y el mayor número de vueltas lideradas. Cabe destacar la trayectoria ascendente de Sexton; aunque su velocidad fue impresionante durante toda la temporada, tuvo que trabajar duro para eliminar los errores que le costaron victorias en las primeras rondas.

Originario de La Moille (Illinois) Sexton es miembro de la familia Honda desde hace mucho tiempo, ya que firmó con la escuadra amateur de Factory Connection en 2015. En 2018 hizo la transición al equipo profesional, con el que ganó el Campeonato de la Región Este de 250SX en 2019 y 2020. Sexton ascendió al equipo oficial de Honda a mitad de año, y fue un habitual del podio durante la temporada 2021. El año pasado consiguió su primera victoria en la categoría reina del AMA Supercross luchando duro contra Eli Tomac durante toda la serie antes de terminar en segundo lugar en la persecución del título.

"¡Campeón, todavía no parece real!", dijo Sexton emocionado tras la carrera. "Es por lo que he trabajado desde que tenía dos años y medio, cuando me subí por primera vez a una moto de cross. Este año no ha sido fácil, he tenido altibajos a mitad de temporada, pero he conseguido cuatro de las seis últimas carreras. Significa mucho para mí. No podría pedir un mejor grupo de gente a mi alrededor, nuestro equipo, todos. Estoy muy, muy agradecida y feliz".

Los números lo dicen todo

La corona de Sexton significa mucho para todos en el Team Honda HRC y American Honda, incluso más de lo que normalmente significaría un logro de este tipo; aunque Honda tiene el mayor número de victorias en el AMA Supercross de cualquier fabricante (228, o 44 más que el segundo clasificado), el título de la categoría reina del AMA Supercross les ha sido esquivo desde que Ricky Carmichael lo consiguiera hace 20 años. Dicho esto, esta es la 16ª vez que Honda gana la corona (un récord), con anteriores campeones de Honda incluyendo leyendas como Donnie Hansen, David Bailey, Johnny O'Mara, Rick Johnson, Jeff Stanton, Jean-Michel Bayle, Jeremy McGrath y Carmichael.

Es la tercera vez que un fabricante gana los tres Campeonatos AMA de Supercross en la misma temporada, y una de las otras dos veces también lo ha conseguido Honda; en 1991, Bayle (Team Honda) se impuso en la categoría reina, mientras que McGrath y Brian Swink (Peak/Pro Circuit Honda) se hicieron con las coronas Oeste y Este, respectivamente. Este último título es la primera vez que lo consigue un solo equipo, y Honda también se ha hecho con el Campeonato de Fabricantes AMA Supercross 2023 por tercera vez consecutiva. Además, el piloto del Team Honda HRC Colt Nichols se hizo con el premio al Mejor Debutante del Año AMA 450SX 2023. Todo esto llega durante una temporada en la que Honda conmemora el 50 aniversario de su primera moto de motocross de producción, la CR250M Elsinore, con la que Gary Jones consiguió el primer Campeonato AMA de Motocross de Honda en 1973.
