Cuarto triunfo consecutivo de Jorge Prado en el Mundial de MXGP

El equipo Honda HRC comenzó la temporada 2023 del AMA Pro Motocross de la misma forma que terminó la del AMA Supercross dos semanas antes: imbatible. El Fox Raceway National en Pala, California, vio al equipo liderar ambas categorías, con Jett Lawrence registrando un impecable 1-1 en manga en su debut en la categoría reina y su hermano Hunter Lawrence finalizando 3-1 para la victoria general en 250.

Es la primera vez que dos hermanos consiguen sendas victorias el mismo día. Mientras tanto, el recién coronado Campeón del AMA Supercross Chase Sexton logró un sólido segundo en la general de la división 450, y Chance Hymas se sobrepuso a las caídas para terminar 12º en la general de 250 durante su debut profesional a tiempo completo.

La CRF450RWE de Jett Lawrence salió de la curva 1 por delante del pelotón en la primera manga, y el joven australiano se puso en marcha. Tras sufrir una caída en los entrenamientos, Sexton se situó cuarto en la salida. Rápidamente superó a Cooper Webb y, un par de minutos antes del ecuador de la carrera, a Dylan Ferrandis, pero la diferencia de 10 segundos con respecto a la cabeza era demasiado grande.

Lawrence volvió a conseguir el holeshot en la segunda salida, pero Sexton se colocó segundo al término de la primera vuelta. El piloto de Illinois acosó a su compañero de equipo durante toda la carrera, pero finalmente no pudo intentar un adelantamiento seguro en una pista resbaladiza y agitada. Al final, la diferencia fue de sólo un segundo.

Jett Lawrence: "Definitivamente no esperaba un día así. Tenía la sensación de que sabía dónde estaba, pero al subir a esta categoría, todo el mundo es rápido y está en forma. En la segunda manga, no dejaba de mirar por encima del hombro, pensando que me había abierto un hueco, ¡sólo para ver si Sexton estaba más cerca que antes! Pero este tipo de batallas me divierten, me hacen ser mejor piloto y ponen a prueba mi capacidad para soportar la presión. Sabía que Chase no iba a ninguna parte y que serían 35 minutos muy largos, pero ha sido estupendo librar una batalla limpia. Espero que toda esta temporada sea una partida de ajedrez, y está bien llevarse la primera ronda".

AMA Pro Motocross 250

Hunter Lawrence no tuvo un gran comienzo en la primera manga del año, completando la vuelta 1 en 10º lugar, pero se puso a trabajar avanzando a través del pelotón. Le llevó algún tiempo ponerse en marcha, pero a pesar de pilotar con dolor en las costillas debido a una caída durante los entrenamientos de la semana, estaba entre los cinco primeros a mitad de carrera, y luego cuarto una vuelta más tarde. Siguió empujando, y en la última vuelta pasó a la tercera posición. Hymas era 17º después de una vuelta, subió rápidamente algunos puestos, luego se cayó y tuvo que recuperarse. A falta de tres vueltas, se colocó 15º, y ahí es donde acabaría.

Lawrence se facilitó la vida en la segunda manga al ser el más rápido en la salida con su CRF250R, y nunca se vio realmente desafiado en su camino hacia una victoria por ocho segundos. Hymas rodó entre los cinco primeros durante la primera mitad de la carrera, pero una caída contribuyó a que terminara 12º.

Hunter Lawrence: "En la primera carrera me limité a hacer lo que podía; estaba empujando al máximo con lo que la pista me daba, pero no quería tirar por la borda un buen final. En la segunda manga hice mucho hincapié en la salida; sabía que necesitaba eso para facilitarme la vida. En este circuito es muy difícil pasar por el pelotón, por la forma que tiene. Una vez que coges el ritmo, es muy difícil soltar el martillo y empezar a eliminar pilotos. Estoy entusiasmado con la forma en que hemos empezado la temporada, y estoy impaciente por seguir así".
