La  KTM 1290 Super Adventure R es la segunda generación de la gama más grande de motos trail de la firma austriaca. Para esta edición se ha diseñado una carrocería totalmente nueva que proporciona una excelente ergonomía y permite mantener el combustible en el depósito lo más bajo posible, con el objetivo de lograr una mayor agilidad, un centro de gravedad más bajo y un comportamiento aún mejor en todas las condiciones de conducción.

Además se ha logrado una mayor precisión en curvas desplazando la columna de dirección 15 mm hacia atrás, reubicando la sección delantera del motor e introduciendo un nuevo basculante de fundición con los refuerzos a la vista ligeramente más largo, para conseguir una mayor sensación de firmeza en la aceleración. Los ingenieros de KTM han analizado y recortado cada centímetro de la nueva carrocería para proporcionar el grosor adecuado y el contacto óptimo entre el piloto y la moto. La sensación de control y equilibrio se ve aumentada por el nuevo depósito de combustible dividido en tres partes, con una capacidad total de 23 l y situado en una posición más baja, con el fin de ofrecer un pilotaje más equilibrado. Al igual que el chasis, el subchasis también ha sido rediseñado y está rematado con un deportivo asiento escalonado de 880 mm de altura, con unas dimensiones muy estilizadas y una práctica guantera situada debajo.

Una nueva configuración 2021 de las suspensiones WP mejora aún más el comportamiento de la moto. La KTM 1290 Super Adventure R se basa en la experiencia de KTM en el offroad, adoptando lo mejor de la tecnología WP XPLOR. La horquilla delantera de 48 mm totalmente regulables ofrece un impresionante recorrido de 220 mm y cuenta con funciones de amortiguación divididas y una gran facilidad de reglaje con unos simples giros de dial para cada función. El amortiguador trasero WP PDS ofrece el mismo recorrido. La gran competitividad de este sistema ha logrado después de exhaustivas sesiones de pruebas en el desierto californiano, así como por largos tramos de diferentes tipos de terrenos por toda Europa.
