La Honda Monkey es quizás más ampliamente conocida como un fantástico icono de los años 70, pero vio la luz por primera vez en 1961. Originalmente desarrollada como un juguete de 49cc para niños, para el Tama Tech, un parque de atracciones en Tokyo, se hizo tan popular que se desarrolló una versión para la calle, inicialmente exportada a América y Europa en 1963, con un distintivo depósito cromado, manillar plegable y ruedas de 5 pulgadas y anclaje rígido. Su popularidad se basó en un diseño simpático y atractivo al instante, unas dimensiones diminutas y un peso ultraligero – lo que la convirtió en una auténtica fuente de diversión por la ciudad.

En 1969 sus ruedas habían aumentado hasta 8 pulgadas de diámetro y en 1970 obtuvo incluso mayor popularidad con la incorporación de una horquilla de extracción rápida que le permitía caber dentro del maletero de un coche pequeño. Para 1978 – un punto que marcó el comienzo del auténtico éxito de la Monkey – la moto había sido rediseñada con un depósito de gasolina tipo lágrima y adquirió enorme popularidad, con legiones de conductores RV (de Vehículos Recreativos) necesitados de un transporte práctico para utilizarlo después de haber aparcado su automóvil.

Y aquí es donde y cuando la descarada Monkey realmente cimentó su lugar en millones de corazones; con su caja de cambios de 3 velocidades y embrague centrífugo (que no necesitaba ninguna habilidad "tradicional" para manejar una motocicleta) ofreció a miles de motoristas su primera experiencia girando el puño a un vehículo motorizado de dos ruedas.

Al ser tan divertida, y tan fácil de conducir, contribuyó más a popularizar las motocicletas entre un público más amplio que quizás cualquier otra máquina. Con sus gordos neumáticos, manillar estilo mini- ‘ape’, minúsculo depósito de gasolina y asiento grande y mullido, el look Monkey es inconfundiblemente de su tiempo, pero - igual que el cariño que se le tiene- también es intemporal.

En 2018 llegó de nuevo la hora de la Monkey. Inspirada por la original (pero también como una práctica y divertida motocicleta de 125cc para el siglo XXI) una Monkey totalmente nueva alegró las calles de Europa. Ahora, para 2022, la Monkey recibe una actualización de motor, una caja de cambios más grande, refinamientos en la suspensión, un color nuevo y mejoras de detalle, aumentando aún más su lado divertido y potenciando su facilidad de uso para el día a día.
